How to choose a cervical pillow
A cervical pillow is a contoured pillow shaped to support the head and neck. This guide explains what to look at before you buy.
1. Start with how you sleep
Side sleepers
You need enough height to fill the gap between your shoulder and your head.
What to look for
A higher side edge and a firm but forgiving core.
Back sleepers
A lower centre helps keep your head from tipping forward, while the neck area is gently supported.
Stomach sleepers
Choose the lowest area of the pillow so your head is not pushed upwards.
2. Height and firmness
Pillow height
Aim for a height that keeps your head level with your spine.
Firmness
Memory foam shapes slowly to your head and neck. Slow-rebound foam feels softer at first and then supports you as it settles.
Tip
Give any new pillow a few nights before judging it.
3. Size and space
Check the pillow size against your bed. The Butterfly model is about 61.5 x 34 x 13 cm and the 2-in-1 Contour model is about 62 x 41 x 13 cm.
4. Materials and the cover
Memory foam core
Memory foam is a common choice for contoured pillows.
Washable cover
A removable cover makes it easy to keep the pillow fresh.
5. A note on pain
A pillow is a comfort product, not a medical treatment. If you have ongoing neck or back pain, speak to your GP or a physiotherapist.
